The Beginning (1987-1995)

The summer of 1987 saw the birth of the gay pageant system in the State of Montana. The first official election of Mr. & Miss Gay Montana was held at a show at the Rainbow Hotel in Great Falls Montana. The newly elected representatives, Jim and Mimi, enlisted the assistance of Monarchs from the Imperial Sovereign Court of Spokane (I.S.C.S.) in preparing for their step down pageant and the election of their successors. The first Mr. & Miss Gay Montana facilitated the elections of the first Mr. & Miss Gay Great Falls and Mr. & Miss Gay Billings. The first Mr. & Miss Gay Montana stepped down the summer of 1988. The pageant was emceed by Empress 16 of Spokane, Eunice, Christy Sinclair, and Zenith Rockafeller. Official records state that live farm chickens were brought in to use as a part of the set!

The second Gay Montana pageant also saw the election of the first Ms. Gay Montana. The 1988-89 reign also enlisted the guidance of the I.S.C.S. It was decided that the next Mr., Miss, & Ms. Gay Montana stepdown pageant would be held in Missoula. The Gay Billings pageant was discontinued, but the Gay Great Falls step down pageant was held and the next Mr., Miss, & Ms. Gay Great Falls reign was elected. The 1988 Mr., Miss, & Ms. Gay Montana pageant was held at the AMVETS club in Missoula.

The 1989-90 reign facilitated the election of the first Mr., Miss, & Ms. Gay Missoula along with seeing to the Mr., Miss, & Ms. Gay Great Falls step down pageant. The court of Spokane continued to assist with facilitating The Gay Montana step down pageant. It was decided that Missoula would become the permanent host city of the Gay Montana step down pageant. The AMVETS club became the location of the event. The 1990-91 reign saw the formation of a Board of Dirctors to monitor financial and legal transactions.

The Board of Directors with the supervision of the I.S.C.S. developed the first official set of bi-laws to govern the Gay Montana titles. The 1991-92 reign saw the first time that Mr., Miss, & Ms. Gay Montana each resided in a different city (Missoula, Helena, and Great Falls). During the 1992-93 reign the Board of Directors and the I.S.C.S. decided that the Gay Montana, Gay Missoula, and Gay Great Falls titles should be officially recognized as its own unifed entity. Bi-laws were revised and filed with the State of Montana under the status of a non-profit charity organization. The organization was named “The Imperial Court of the State of Montana” (I.C.S.M.). The Imperial Sovereign Court of Spokane became the mother court and assisted with getting the Mr., Miss, & Ms. Gay Montana pageant listed in the International Court calendar.

The Mr., Miss, & Ms. Gay Montana title holders would be recognized as the highest titles of the I. C.S.M. and preside over city titleholders. From 1993 to 1995 the I.C.S.M. continued to raise money for charity, host shows, and travel to other court functions outside of Montana and eleceted successive State and City title holders. Both State and City step down pageants. began to have themes and an I.C.S.M. general membership was formed. The Gay Great Falls titles were discontinued in 1994. The 1994-95 elected Mr., Miss, & Ms. Gay Missoula title holders reigned an unusual 18 months due to changing the Gay Missoula pegeant date from September to March.

In 1995 the Board of Directors and mother court of Spokane began plans for the transition to become a sovereign court. Bi-laws were again updated and structural plans were developed to incorporate the titles of Emperor, Empress, Prince, and Princess. Mama Jose, escorted by Truckstop Tracey and Brenda Buffett, made an improptu visit to meet with I.C.S.M. representatives. Her imperial blessing was given and plans for the new empire were finalized. The new bi-laws and papers of incorporation were filed with Montana State officials. The new empire became know as the Imperial Sovereign Court of the State of Montana. (I.S.C.S.M.). The Adornment Coronation was held in Missoula at the AMVETS club in September of 1995. The theme was a baby shower! The community elected Gina and Rachelle as Emperor 1 & Empress 1 of all Montana.
